From designing construction plans for major freeways to creating artificial organs, the field of engineering is all over the place. Engineering is the application of scientific, economic, or social knowledge for the purpose of designing and building buildings, systems, devices, and processes. Given this definition, it’s easy to see how it has become a broad field of study. When it comes to traditional or online degree programs in engineering, students generally have to pursue a specialization. Common specializations in the field include chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, industrial, petroleum, aerospace, and nuclear, just to name a few. Often, on-campus or online bachelor’s degree programs are separated by these specializations, allowing students to focus their education and develop their skills in one area. While engineering jobs are not necessarily hard to find, there are some areas where employment is increasing more than others.
