Colorado has numerous universities with campuses around the state. It is home to the United States Air Force Academy, which is located near Colorado Springs, Colo. The campus is dedicated to officer candidates for the U.S. Air Force and is a major tourist destination. Colorado also has two significant state school systems: Colorado State University and the University of Colorado. Colorado State University has two campuses in Fort Collins and Pueblo, Colo., and is recognized for its graduate programs in sciences; engineering, occupational therapy; and social sciences, such as psychology and social work. Notable Colorado State alumni include actor Keith Carradine, former Al-Qaeda leader Anwar Al-Awlaki, and astronaut Martin Fettman.
The state’s other large public university, the University of Colorado, is located in Boulder and has two satellite campuses in Colorado Springs and Denver, Colo. The University of Colorado has many highly ranked academic programs and graduate schools. Its law school, the Boulder School of Law, is the most selective college on campus. The business school, particularly its entrepreneurship program, is well regarded. The university is also known for its science programs including its aerospace engineering, quantum physics, and molecular physics. Notable University of Colorado alumni include actor Jonah Hill, South Park co-creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, and actor Robert Redford, although he did not graduate.
Colorado has several other state schools, such as the University of Denver and the University of Northern Colorado. There is also an extensive community college system and numerous private colleges and universities. Online college degree programs are available from many for-profit institutions in Colorado. Online degree programs are becoming more popular with students and Colorado universities and the state’s education board are working to respond to this demand.
Colorado Distance Learning Initiatives
The Colorado Department of Education established its Office of Online and Blended Learning in 2007. This online learning division strives to provide up-to-date information to students and providers about online learning resources and opportunities in Colorado. The Colorado Commission on Higher Education made it one of their objectives to develop a state-wide extended studies, off-campus system. Colorado also participates in distance learning programs with WICHE, the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education. Some community colleges participate in the North American Network of Science Labs Online (NANSLO), a program that provides access to remote lab environments in conjunction with online science course enrollment. Colorado also participates in the WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies (WCET), WICHE’s online learning collaborative.
Online degree programs from major universities are widely available throughout Colorado’s higher education system. Colorado schools with online degree programs include Colorado State University, the University of Colorado, Regis University, and many others. Online bachelors degree programs and master’s degrees are offered through most of Colorado’s state institutions. Some of them even offer online doctoral degree programs.
