Yale has also graduated numerous notable journalists and politicians, such as former presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, as well as U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Connecticut also has some very prominent public universities. The University of Connecticut (UConn) is one of the highest-ranked public institutions in the northeastern United States. Its main campus is located in Storrs, Conn. However, UConn has six other campuses in its system. The main campus has one of the highest retention rates in the country with 92% of freshman students returning to campus for their sophomore year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. While UConn is very strong academically, it is best-known outside of Connecticut for its men’s and women’s basketball, football, soccer, and other athletic programs. UConn boasts numerous successful alumni, including actress Meg Ryan and novelist Wally Lamb.

Connecticut Distance Learning Initiatives

The Connecticut State Board of Regents for Higher Education promotes equal standards of education among a group of seventeen state colleges and universities. The board includes four state universities, twelve community colleges, and one completely online institution, Charter Oak State College. Charter Oak is Connecticut’s only public online college. The school’s degree offerings are not extensive; however it does offer online degree completion programs as well as individual distance education courses.

Charter Oak is just one of many institutions in Connecticut that have online degree programs. Many private colleges and universities offer accredited online degree programs, including online accelerated degree programs, bachelor’s degrees, and master’s degrees. For example, Post University is a for-profit institution that offers online graduate degree programs in human services, business, and education. College students and adult learners in Connecticut have a wealth of options when it comes to in-state online education, even though Connecticut’s higher education system is relatively small.
