California is ‘home to some of the most prestigious universities in the country, including Stanford University; the University of California, Berkley; and the University of Southern California. Stanford University, located in Palo Alto, Calif., has received worldwide recognition for the excellence of its academic programs. Stanford’s medical and law schools are extremely selective, as are many of its academic programs. The institution is not far from the University of California, Berkeley, which is also very strong academically. But it is also known for its athletic programs, which rival nearby Stanford’s.
The southern half of California is home to several prominent state universities: the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Both institutions have large student bodies and a diverse selection of degree programs. USC is known for many of its graduate school programs in areas such as social work and occupational therapy. USC is also known for its dominance in NCAA Division 1 athletics programs.
California Distance Learning Initiatives
The California Department of Education strives to make learning opportunities available to all residents. It has focused on adult education and literacy by developing online tools and websites for adult learners. California also participates in several distance learning programs coordinated by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). California participates in the WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technology (WCET), a program that facilities technology and distance education systems in schools with online degree programs. The state also participates in the Internet Course Exchange (ICE) program. ICE allows participating colleges and universities to collaborate and share internet courses offered by faculty to give students a more diverse online course selection.
In addition to state-wide efforts to improve adult education opportunities, many state university online degree programs in California cater to adult learners as well as traditional students. Online college degree programs from major universities like the University of Southern California, California State University, and the University of California Los Angeles make continuing education a reality for many adult students. Online degree completion programs pair well with California’s extensive and highly utilized community college system. Adult learners can complete the general courses for their degree at a local community college, then complete their degree through an online program.
